So here we are… KeepItFocused.com. The first name that came into mind for my blog. Well actually it was the first domain that was free. I had some more options which I won’t be bothering you with. This is what it will be and to be honest, I don’t think it’s that bad. (update 20-06-2010: Moved the blog to my personal name www.sjoerdbooij.nl)
What will this site try to bring you guys that isn’t allready out there? Formost I’ll be posting photos I take during my trial and error run into becoming (I hope) a photographer. Not for a living.. well not just yet, but who knows what live brings you right!? I’ve been interested in photography for a long time allready but never owned a dSLR. That changed last year (2009) when I bought a Nikon D300. A hell of a camera for someone who never owned a dSLR. That being said, it might be clear that I had no idea how to operate such a delicate machine. Luckily I am kind of a techie, so this part I figured out quite soon. I picked a 16-85mm Nikkor, after some in depth site surfing (www.photozone.de), to be my lens to start with. Besides being a techie I am also kind of a gadget freak, which made me buy a couple of more lenses in the past year. BUT then I realized that just having good equipment doesn’t make you a better photographer. I started reading tutorials (you should see my Google Reader), buying books and just putting things into practice. And now.. I’ve reached a point where I am willingly sharing my photos with you guys to get critiqued and because of that becoming better at what I started to love. Oh, and of course I hope to get some complements along the way as well
Anyway, besides sharing my photos, I’ll be trying to write some tutorial like articles. In doing so, I hope to pass on the knowledge which I gain from reading a lot of other photography blogs and, of course, from taking a lot of pictures.
That being said, I just wanted to make some quick comments on the photo that started this post. I took this picture a couple of weeks ago when there was a lot of snow lying around. I was passing the railway when in the distance I noticed some people. I quickly dropped on my knees and clicked. When I arrived back home I started thinking of what to do and wasn’t really sure. Just last week I decided to turn it into a B&W photo. Why? Because I feel that the people in the picture pop out more.
What I learned from taking this picture and especially from the not knowing what to do with it afterwards, is that thinking ahead in most cases will eventually help you take better pictures. If you have the picture taken in you head allready, things become way more easy. This is something I still find difficult though and I guess this all comes down to getting inspiration on what to photograph.
Well folks, that’s it for now. I hope you liked the first post.. if not, await and see if the second one is more to your liking. Oh and if you do like it.. please put the word out. Twitter, Facebook, Hyves, wherever… let them know that KeepItFocused.com is here.
