Frequently asked questions and everything about my approach to weddings, family and couple shoots.

My approach to Wedding Photography

I love composing real, true to life images that will get you right back in the moment they were shot. The sort of images that will make you smile or tear up of joy; honor the in-between moments; guide the viewer rather than overwhelm them; connect with you in a deeper way than just a pretty image; stand the test of time; and portray what your wedding day felt like together with all your favorite friends and family.

My passion is to create while holding up a certain esthetic. Focusing on finding good light and in-between moments. Playing with creative boundaries but never losing sight of the story. I believe in letting people be themselves. Not pushing them in a “desired” direction, but rather just watch and document. Capture what is unfolding in front of me and let that be the beautiful story that it is.

I build friendships during the day to gain trust and understand who you and the people around you are. When friendships are made, albeit just for one day, capturing the true story feels so much more natural to everyone. I am there to accommodate the real moments how big or small they may be. You dad reading the morning newspaper; your mum lovingly checking your dress for the 100th time; all the guests partying on the dance floor; getting ready with your girls; evening cigars and Scotch with your boys; to name a few.

Show me your way with love. Your character with all it’s beautiful quirks. Your humor, excitement and passions. It’s all worth documenting. Be bold and be you. Two people in love, sharing life.

Each wedding is special to me and I always devote myself to create unique images. Images that represent your story together with all the people that are close to you. A story that will bring you back to what this beautiful day felt like.

Yes totally! I love to meet new people and I believe it’s a great idea to connect and get to know each other. It helps in understanding your story and capture something that is unique to you.

All my meetings take place at my home in Haarlem, the Netherlands or we can do a Skype / FaceTime call. I prefer meeting in person, but sometimes that’s difficult. Get in touch to setup a meeting!

I started out as a full time photographer in the beginning of 2011. Before that I was already very interested in photography and always shooting pictures while traveling for example. Since 2011 everything changed to being a professional and taking on actual paid jobs as a photographer.

I will typically shoot no more than 20 weddings each year.

When I first started out in 2011 I shot a lot more per year, but I feel the need to connect with my couples to create something amazing together. In order for me to do this I time to really invest in my couples. Help you out where needed, guide you through all the planning and more. I can’t do that with over 20 weddings per year.

I am happy to hear you are thinking about booking me! 🙂

To make sure we get everything sorted, I need a signed contract and a 50% retainer to book your date. Get in touch and I’ll send you all the details.

I am based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and shooting weddings worldwide. If you have any questions about quotes for a particular destination, make sure to get in touch and we’ll get the talk started!

No weird directed posing. I will focus on storytelling and being a fly on the wall. I will help with some natural direction whenever called for, but most of all I wanna make sure you actually enjoy your day.

I want to capture what your day feels like in the most real way, since that is what brings you back in the moment when you watch the images afterwards.

I always take formal family portraits. I know those matter. Maybe not now, but they sure will in the future. Trust me on that. If planned for in the right way, family formals won’t have to take long.

When we’re out shooting just the two of you, I’ll give you natural direction, bringing out the true YOU. I’m pretty good at getting people out of that awkward zone and capture those natural responses. It’s all about asking the right questions, enjoying the moment and not putting on too much pressure.

For the biggest part of the day I will shoot documentary style. Capturing real moments that happen in front of me and tell the story of your wedding day. You just have to make sure to enjoy everything and get in the moment, let me do the rest.

Relaxed, happy humans enjoying life to the fullest.

If you care more about candid, honest photos, than perfectly staged portraits with every hair in place, then I’d love to shoot you.

If you don’t want your wedding to feel like a big production, and just want a chill photographer who might be barefoot at your reception, then we’ll be great together.

If you trust me to do my thing, we’ll definitely be able to create some cool things together.

I think embracing the weather that we have is the best way to go, since all weather types can be very beautiful and unique in photos. Rainy shoots where people embrace it and just show their true love keeping each other warm, are some of my favorites. Or how about a snowy day, throwing some snowballs and riding a sled… Don’t get caught in the perception that only sunny days are good for shooting, because sometimes they are not.

That being said. If the weather is going to be so bad my gear starts disagreeing or your body does ;-), we would be able to reschedule.

  • Wear clothes that make you feel like yourself.
  • Complement each other with colors, but don’t match colors to ensure you stay separate people in the photos.
  • Pastel colors, neutral toning, earthly tones. All of these work very well.
  • If you need to figure out colors, check out this color scheme website.
  • Don’t put on clothing with “screamy” patterns. It’s about you, not the brand you’re wearing.
  • We can do two outfits to change things up, so bring extra clothing if you want. Remember though, it’s about the true emotions and in-between moments way more than the actual clothing. Styling your clothing is the icing on the cake.
  • If you need more tips, please send me a message before the shoot and I can send you my “What to wear Guide”.

When shooting a full day 10 hour wedding, I typically deliver in the range of 400 – 600 images. All of these are post processed to match the look that you see on my website. All images are delivered as high resolution JPG files, ready to be used for printing.

For couple and family sessions the amount of images I deliver will be somewhere in the range of 50 – 100, depending on how long we are shooting (1 – 2 hours typically).

I will deliver all of the images no later than 8 weeks after your wedding. I will typically deliver a preview sooner of course. Depending on the time of season this may vary between 1 to 3 weeks.

For couple / family shoots I normally deliver all images within 1 to 2 weeks after shooting.

Absolutely! Most of the couples I work with feel this way. Trust me, even the ones that look super natural in my portfolio told me they were going to be awkward.

My job is to create a vibe that makes you feel relaxed and able to be yourselves. The first 5 minutes might feel weird, but then it will actually be fun most people tell me afterwards. It’s a small adventure together. Don’t worry about modelling or being something you are not. Just be you and show your love the way you normally would and you’ll be great.

Miscellaneous

Classical analog and striving for true to life color is something that I find very important in my editing. Trends come and go and I believe that wedding images should stand the test of time. I also have a deep affection for black and white images, so you can definitely find some of those in your delivery.

I truly believe that having your photos in print is something very important. Having hundreds of photos on an iPad just isn’t the same.

I deliver high quality fine-art albums. All the albums I deliver are hand crafted. You can pick many colors, linnen or leather fabrics, different sizes, paper sorts… the possibilities and combinations are endless, so I’m not going to mess with your head right now. Shoot me an email and I can send you more information about the full process of getting an album.

I use Adobe Lightroom on all my images to make sure they look the way they do. Edits are made for exposure, contrast, color, sharpness. I don’t do any retouching to your images unless it’s a simple blemish removal. I believe in keeping things as real as they are. Of course a big pimple on your forehead that developed the day before your wedding will be taken out, but no other skin retouches are done to my images.

No, as I believe the RAW images are not a final product to be delivered. I want you to experience the full package you booked and that includes my post processing finished and in place. This way the final look of my work matches what you first saw on my website. I am very keen on selecting everything that tells your story, so no worries of missing out. If you feel there is a photo missing, I am more than happy to look through my images and send it over to you if it’s there.

It’s very important to me to always make sure I can keep shooting no matter what. For that reason I bring backup gear to all weddings and even a couple shoot. I also bring a laptop to most of my weddings to make sure I can create backups when a quiet moment arrises. Besides that I use camera’s that hold two different cards that save all my files as a backup in camera already.

Yes, of course! Sometimes things just run longer at weddings than anticipated beforehand. When you need me to stay for an extra hour or so, that is totally fine. The maximum of extra hours you can book afterwards is two. I will send you an invoice for the extra hour(s), right after the wedding.

Definitely! I have shot over 200 weddings so please do pick my brain for tips and tricks. I have seen many things that might work or not and I would love to share this knowledge with you.

I also know the industry pretty well, so if you need something I can point you in the right direction or people.

Heaven forbids this happens, as it would only happen if it were out of my control (act of god, illness, death, etc). If in any of the mentioned circumstances I won’t be able to make it, I will try and do my best to help you find a photographer to take my place. Someone of course with a similar style to match my own. Since my network of photographers is bigger than yours, I will do my best to get you in touch with these people.

If I can’t make it to your wedding your money will, of course, be refunded.

It all depends on your timeline and wishes. We will talk about this during our meetup or Skype call and figure out what works best for you guys. I know I can create something beautiful for everyone, so I encourage people to always fit in some time for a photo shoot. Some people have 20 minutes. Others want a full 2 hour adventure hike somewhere nice. It’s up to you.

I prefer a time of day with good light, so for example at the end of the day with low light. Another benefit to that is, your ceremony is done and you feel relaxed enough to actually enjoy the shoot. You might have had a drink or two, which of course helps to process of relaxedness 😉

Yes I totally do! I know you have spend quite some time on planning it all and making sure it looks great, so YES I capture all that. I put most of my focus on the moments and emotions that happen between people, since I believe those are the most valuable in the end, but the styling details need to be covered as well.

Family formals are not peoples favorite most of the time. I get that. I will however capture them in a natural way and do it as quick as possible. I can tell you more about how I work with these during a meetup.
